Stairwell to Heaven
Stairwell to Heaven is a community choir based in Annandale in the inner west of Sydney. The choir was formed in 1998 and will be celebrating their 10-year anniversary later this year. The choir became a reality when the parent body at Annandale North Public School discovered a common bond with their children through music which had been introduced through the school’s Arts Festival. Fortune smiled on that first group of enthusiastic hopefuls with an introduction to the well known a cappella identity Stuart Davis who opened our eyes to the joys of singing - and a choir was born. New members were encouraged from the local area and the choir began to meet on a weekly basis at the school. Due to growing numbers the group was pushed for quality rehearsal space and they found themselves singing in the stairwell where they found not only more room, but great acoustics. And so they became “Stairwell to Heaven”, (apologies to Led Zeppelin). They have moved on since those heady days and we now number some 35 members and two wonderful musical directors in Kate Swadling and Steven Clarke. They meet every Tuesday at the Uniting Church Hall in Johnston Street, Annandale. Their eclectic repertoire includes Gospel, Pop, R&B, Soul, African and early popular music. They have performed publicly at weddings, Christmas functions, birthdays, competitions and fundraisers but mostly, they just love to sing. Oh, and they love to socialise and immerse themselves in their community. Hear them: Lily in the Valley (mp3 - 2.4MB) When are they on? Thursday September 11, 8pm |
